Week 16: Final Class

I figured out how to put up better quality of the videos through embedding so they are below.

Render Magazine Walkthrough Video from Emily Clawson on Vimeo.

Render Horizontal video from Emily Clawson on Vimeo.

I received overall positive feedback on my publication. For some reason during my presentation my videos popped out and were viewed in a separate window, but since most of the class has seen my work we decided that it was not a big deal. I received feedback mainly to connect the bars in my storyboarding article and for the same article looking for a thicker typeface for the pullout and subtitles. I hope to pursue this project further in the future and add more articles.

Week 15 Out of Class: Completing Render

The corrections I made before completing include
  • tweaking the text in my after effects video to include a rounded rectangle and reversed text.

  • I removed the gray bar from the mograph page of my social media article to make it more consistent with the other pages. This also allows for more space of the text in that section.

  • The above and below picture show the change I made to the header of each page. It now reflects the impact spread typeface I used to link the pages of the article together. I made it white to also stand out from the body copy it is right next to.

  •  Below is the impact spread for the social media article. To stop the edge tension on the page I pushed the entire shape downward to have it go off the screen in a similar way that the circles do in the vertical version.

Below are the videos I created using the reflector program and posted onto vimeo.

Week 15B

Today in class what I mainly worked on was reworking the title typography of my tutorial review article. It was decided monday that I should revisit this spread because throughout the project I built up a better understanding of the feel I was going for. Below are the results.

Week 15A

Today in class we had a group critique and overall I received positive feedback.

Feedback

  • everyone really enjoyed the social media spreads and felt they were the most dynamic. there was some debate over the abstract image on the impact spread, like if the words should be there or if their angles should change, this is something I am going to explore
  • since that layout is so dynamic it was suggested that I revamp the text on the impact spread of the tutorial video article
  • on the news page have the titles on the left side right alined to prevent awkward space
  • have the names of the social media sites stick out more (maybe make them white)
  • maybe have the blobs float towards the next page to signal the larger circle
  • take the dark line out of the mograph section

Week 14: Out of Class

There was not Week 14B post because of Thanksgiving Break. I was able to refine a few things over break.

First I fixed the color issue on the third page of the social media article. Below is a picture of the original background color and the change.

Initially, I had tried to change it up and have white body copy with a grey checklist, but readability was not there. I was hoping the change in background color would help but it did not so instead I had the copy copy be the darker color and allowed the checklist to be white.

I am not longer trying to do the flipping circle idea because it was not working out and I could not fit it into any of my other layouts, so I felt that there was a disconnect. So I took that section out of the interaction key and explained my system for the page numbers instead.

So I did not lose that content I fit the two rectangles on the spread together and removed the stroke. I feel that this is a good solution instead of trying to fit it all on one larger rectangle.

I also figured out how I wanted to do the impact spread for the social media article. I ended up cutting the text up (as seen in the screenshot below). I feel that this is more dynamic and it connects to the page links within the abstract shape. I chose to keep the outer text black to help balance the black body copy deck at the opposing corner.

Finally I also fixed the settings on my cover video so now the viewer can pause and play at just a tap instead of all of the controls coming up and not being able to more on.

Week 14A

Today in class I  continued work on the fourth article that I had started working on at the end of last week. Below are screenshots of the progress.

One of the main things I started to tackle was the impact spread. At first I was not sure what imagery to include for this article. After some feedback I decided to combine all the shapes from the secondary pages into an abstract form. I decided to use the neon pink from the last spread to link everything together/ bookend it. Next after some playing around I have the names of each site cut out of the shape, these will serve as quick links to the below pages. The impact page is still a work in progress.

The next thing I completed in class today was adding in the features list to the content of each section of the article. It is a list of 5 items, each site's page as the boxes that apply to the page checked. I chose to do this section in a secondary color to break up the page.

I am worried about readability of the secondary color of text on this page (motionographer), so it is something I am going to look into.

Week 13 Out Of Class

Working on the cover video:

For the cover I decided on doing a interesting effect that interacted with the title and that helped to give the feel of the magazine. I feel that I did accomplish this. I found a tutorial through youtube that helped me to create this. It runs about 10 seconds long. I decided to use a purple hue because it goes along with my color scheme and I have yet to use it.

Render News Article: (Article 3)

This is the complete Vertical and horizontal versions of my third article for next class. It does not really have a title it is just the news segment, as it is labeled in the top right corner like the rest of my articles.

This article includes three short stories and contacting the magazine, about the cover and about a competition I made up. The content includes fake emails and such but because none of these elements or sites actually exist there are no links or interactions on this page. This article follows directly after the cover page so its theme and design is based off of the effect I created for the cover. I felt that this would aide the reader in easing into the magazine.  In the bottom right corner is a small interaction key for the reader so they can learn and understand what is clickable within the publication.

 Social Network Article: (Article 4)

After completing article three, I started right into article four. Article four is the article about the types of design/motion design social media. I have not done the impact spread yet but below are the three content pages in both orientations.

I took patterns from the site's logo (for example dribbble's logo is a basketball so circle) and created a section for the text to stand out from the screenshot of the site. Each section's color is based of the website. After some experimenting I figured out that saving the screenshots out as jpegs is a way to get the best quality on the Ipad (I also had tried .png and .tiff). The current content is mainly content from the site's about section, explaining what they are about. I plan on refining the copy, but keeping it a similar length. For the rest of the space I am going to create a checklist to compare each site's features.
